The Yankees bolstered their lineup with the addition of Giancarlo Stanton. But the Marlins threatened to keep him in Miami for life.
Nothing this offseason will come close to the Giancarlo Stanton trade to the Yankees. New York gave up practically nothing to acquire Stanton, who rejected offers from the Cardinals and Giants. News broke after the trade became official on Monday that the Marlins wanted to decide where Giancarlo would land.
The backstory of the Giancarlo Stanton trade is bonkers. Miami threatened that if he didn’t accept a trade to St. Louis or San Francisco, he would be a Marlin for life. He called their bluff. And because of it, he’s a New York Yankee.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 11, 2017
Talk about calling a bluff. Stanton’s agent, Joel Wolfe, said that the slugger wasn’t even phased by his former clubs remarks.
Agent joel wolfe said marlins suggested to giancarlo if he didn’t accept the cardinals or giants he’d be a marlin for the next 10 years. Stanton obviously didnt over-react to that, or even react at all.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) December 11, 2017
Wolfe said the Marlins told him and Stanton that if he didn’t accept a deal to the Cardinals or Giants, he’d be a Marlin for the rest of his career. Their response: “That’s not going to happen. We want you to continue to look.”— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) December 11, 2017
The reasoning to why the Marlins wanted to keep Giancarlo out of New York are obvious, knowing that is was one of the cities he wanted to go to. They tried to push him to a place where they would get good prospects in return, not pay a lot, and make sure he wasn’t a threat.
With the addition of Stanton, the Yankees are now the new World Series favorites, at 5-1. At the end of the day, Stanton basically told the Marlins to get lost and is now a Yankee. That lineup in the Bronx is going to be exciting for the future.
