All Justin Turner needed to do was get a base hit to put the Dodgers up 2-0 against the Cubs. With two outs and runners on first and second, Turner decided to launch a 1-0 offering from John Lackey deep to center field to win the ball game. Turner and his luscious red locks trotted around the bases while Dodger Stadium was in pandemonium.

First of all, props to the fan in center field on an impressive catch. Turner’s long ball was the first postseason walk off home run since Kirk Gibson’s legendary dinger off Dennis Eckersley in the 1988 World Series. An injured and hobbling Gibson was called on to pinch hit, and after battling to a full count, hit a two run home run to win the game 5-4.

Gibson launched his home run on October 15, 1988, exactly 29 years to the day prior to Turner’s home run last night. Gibson’s blast in 1988 was the spark plug for the Dodgers that series, as they went on to win in five games. 1988 was also the last time the Dodgers won a World Series.

While Turner’s home run might not have been as dramatic as Gibson’s, it still was very important for the Dodgers. Its safe to assume that October 15 is now both Gibsons and Turners new favorite days ever. Maybe this will lead the Dodgers into the World Series, and snap this championship drought.
