As the postseason is vastly approaching, teams are looking to make that final push to leverage themselves into a playoff position.
In September baseball there has been records broken, unbeatable teams look beatable and surprise teams climbing to the top. We took a look at the top 5 teams heading into the middle of September.
Heres our list:
#5 The Arizona Diamondbacks
This team hasn't got as much love as they deserve this season. With stars such as Paul Goldschmidt and Zack Greinke that can carry a team on both sides of the field. J.D. Martinez who is absolutely mashing baseballs is taking that offense to a new level. The reason that the Diamondbacks are sitting at number five is due to a few things; besides J.D. Martinez the offense hasn't been producing all that much lately. With players such as AJ Pollock hitting under .200 they are going to need their supporting cast to step up.
#4 The Houston Astros
Losing the top spot in the American League can be a tough pill to swallow, unless you've lost it to a team who's has won 21 straight games. With the acquisition of Justin Verlander they have added veteran presence to a rotation that many agree needed it. With Carlos Correra back in the lineup the Astros can arguably be the top offense in the American League. This team has been able to coast to a playoff position and will be a force to be reckon with in the playoffs.
#3 The Los Angeles Dodgers
This season has been a historic one for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Many papers were writing that this could possibly be the best team in Dodgers history and at point they were sure playing like it. As of right now they are playing the complete opposite of that. The Dodgers have amazing talent on the team with players such as none other than Clayton Kershaw, Cody Bellinger; the list goes on and on. Their last minute trade deadline pickup Yu Darvish hasn't been what they had expected, although he did have a bounce back game last night against the Giants. Well see which team shows up in the playoffs.
#2 The Washington Nationals
With 3 of the 5 men in their rotation being CY Young contenders how can you not be in the top five teams in the majors. With the three headed monster of Mad Max, Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez they could make a five game series look really easy. The problem with the Nationals is when they get to October. They don't seem to get past the first round EVERY YEAR. Well see if this year can be any different for the Nats.
#1 The Cleveland Indians
This is the easiest number one that there has been all season. When your team wins 21 straight games and breaks the American League record there is no argument for who is number one. From top to bottom this team is complete. With my 2017 CY Young winner Corey Kluber at the top of the rotation, to the big lefty Andrew Miller waiting in the bullpen there is no give up in this Indians pitching staff. On the offensive side with guys such as Jose Ramirez, Fransico Lindor and Edwin Encarnación they can sure put enough runs on the board to support that pitching staff. Lets see if the Indians can complete the journey and bring a World Series home to the land.
