The Four Rules That Cover Almost Everything
Wash cold. Hot water is what shrinks cotton and breaks down the elastic in a waistband or cuff. It also sets protein stains - sweat, grass, blood from a slide - instead of lifting them. Cold water is not a compromise here; for athletic apparel it genuinely cleans better.
Turn it inside out. Screen prints, puff prints and any color-treated graphic wear from friction, not from detergent. Inside out means the print rubs against the garment's own interior instead of against a zipper, a pair of jeans, or the drum. This is the single cheapest thing you can do to keep a graphic looking new.
Air dry. Covered in depth below, but the short version: heat is the enemy of every performance property you paid for.
Skip the fabric softener. Softener works by depositing a thin waxy film on fibers. On cotton that feels nice. On a moisture-wicking synthetic it clogs exactly the channels that move sweat off skin, and a wicking layer that can't wick is just a shirt. Dryer sheets do the same thing. If you want something in the wash, use a detergent made for athletic fabric.
Why Heat Is the Thing That Actually Ruins Gear
Almost every care rule on this page traces back to one variable. It's worth understanding why, because it explains what to do with pieces this guide doesn't name.
Heat kills stretch recovery. Spandex — the 11% in an 89/11 performance knit, the 6% in a 94/6, the 10% in a nylon shell — is what lets a garment stretch and return to shape. Repeated high heat permanently relaxes those fibers. The garment doesn't rip; it just stops springing back, and a performance layer that's gone slack sits away from the skin and stops wicking. This is why a two-year-old performance hoodie feels baggy in the shoulders.
Heat cracks prints. A screen print is a layer of ink sitting on top of the fabric. The fabric flexes in a hot dryer more than the ink does, and the ink loses that argument. Cracking and fading are heat damage, not wash damage.
Heat destroys reactive inks. UV-reactive, color-changing and glow-in-the-dark prints are the least heat-tolerant things we make. Heat is the primary cause of the effect fading.
Heat degrades elastic. Sock cuffs, waistbands, the grip band inside an arm sleeve. All of it relaxes or warps with repeated tumble drying.
So: air dry, in the shade, and you've solved most of the problem at once.
The Dryer Question, Answered Plainly
Air drying is the safe default for everything on this page, and it's what we recommend across the board.
There is one narrow exception. A plain poly-cotton fleece or 100% cotton French terry piece with no print and no spandex can take a low tumble without harm. Even then, air drying keeps the fleece pile from matting down, and matted fleece traps less air, which means a flatter, less warm hoodie over time.
Everything else — anything with spandex, any print, any reactive ink, any nylon shell — air dry only. Not "low heat." Air dry.
Fabric by Fabric

Poly-cotton fleece, 68% polyester / 32% cotton.
Baseline Hoodie, America's Pastime Crewneck, 101 Skeleton Hoodie and Joggers, Baseline Sweatpants.
The everyday hoodie and crewneck fabric, and the warmest thing most people own. Cold wash, inside out. Air dry preferred; low tumble acceptable if there's no print. The cotton content means it holds a little moisture, so give it real drying time rather than folding it damp.
Poly-cotton fleece, lighter — 59% polyester / 41% cotton.

Cold, inside out, air dry, no softener — the full set of rules, no exceptions. This fabric is bought for stretch and wicking, and heat plus softener is precisely how you lose both.
Waffle knit, 100% polyester.
Off-Field Waffle Performance Hoodie.
Durable and more heat-tolerant than the spandex blends, but the waffle texture flattens under a hot tumble and that structure is the point of the fabric. Air dry.
Windbreakers and rain shells.
Heritage Premium Windbreaker — 85% polyester / 15% spandex.
Rain Delay Jacket — 100% polyester.
Cold wash, air dry, and never iron one. Shells dry fast on their own so there's no reason to put them near heat. One note specific to the Rain Delay: the water-activated panel is designed to reveal logos when wet and fade as it dries — that's the product working, not a fault.
Nylon shell, 90% nylon / 10% spandex.

Waterproof, and the one piece here where heat does the most damage. Cold wash, air dry only, never iron, and don't leave it in a hot car.

Machine wash cold on gentle, inside out, mild detergent. No bleach, no optical brighteners, no fabric softener. Air dry in the shade. Never iron a printed area, and store them out of direct sun — leaving a piece on a hot dashboard between games does more damage than a season of washing. Glow-in-the-dark prints follow the same rules for the same reason: heat degrades the phosphor faster than washing does.
The Pieces That Never Go in the Machine
Four exceptions, and each one is a garment people ruin exactly once.
Structured hats. Snapbacks, fitted caps and trucker hats have a stiffened crown and a shaped brim. A washing machine warps both and can damage embroidery. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, work the sweatband gently, and let it air dry sitting on something that holds the crown's shape. Never soak it, never put it in a dishwasher, and don't leave it balled at the bottom of a bag for a season.
Slides and footwear. Wipe clean. No machine, no prolonged heat, no direct sun - they shrink and warp.
Backpacks. Spot clean only. No machine washing, no tumble drying.
Socks, Sleeves and the Small Stuff
These are the pieces most likely to be thrown in with everything else, and they're also the cheapest to replace, which is why nobody thinks about them until the elastic goes.
Performance socks (95% polyester / 5% spandex). Cold wash, air dry. Heat is what turns a snug crew sock into one that slides down inside a cleat. Wash them inside out if they've been in a wet cleat all day — that's where the odor lives.
Arm sleeves (85% polyester / 15% spandex). The machine is fine — cold water, gentle cycle, no fabric softener. The dryer is not. A sleeve stays up because of the band at the top, and heat relaxes that band permanently. Once it goes, the sleeve slides down the arm all game and there's no fixing it. Air dry, every time. Store them flat or loosely rolled rather than balled up in a damp bag.
Storage generally. Damp gear left in a sealed bag is how mildew starts, and mildew smell is much harder to remove than sweat. Empty the bag after every game.
Fixing What Already Went Wrong
It still smells after washing. Bacteria live in the fiber, not on it, and a normal cold cycle doesn't always reach them. Soak the piece for 30 minutes in cold water with a cup of white vinegar, then wash cold as usual, no softener. Repeat once if needed. Don't reach for hot water - it sets the odor-causing oils.
It's pilling. Pilling is abrasion, usually from washing performance fabric with towels, denim or Velcro. It's cosmetic and you can shave it off with a fabric shaver. Prevent it by washing athletic gear together, inside out, and closing every zipper and Velcro strap before it goes in.
The print is cracking. This is heat damage and it isn't reversible. Stop the dryer, keep washing inside out, and it won't spread further.
It lost its stretch. Also not reversible. Spandex that's been heat-relaxed doesn't recover. Air drying from here protects what's left.
Whites have gone dull. Grey, not yellow, is the usual problem, and it's build-up rather than staining - detergent residue and hard-water minerals sitting in the fibers. Wash whites on their own rather than with colors, use less detergent rather than more, and add half a cup of distilled white vinegar to the rinse to strip the residue. Skip chlorine bleach on anything with a print; it attacks the print faster than it brightens the shirt. Oxygen bleach is safe on white cotton if you need it. Sunlight is genuinely effective on plain white cotton - dry it outside, print side down so the graphic isn't in direct sun.
Grass and dirt stains. Treat cold and treat early. Work a little detergent into the stain, let it sit 15 minutes, wash cold. Heat sets these permanently, so never dry a piece that still shows a stain - check it wet, treat it again if needed.
