Our grandson is in Middle School now and there is a dress code. (BOO! No fun shorts or shirts allowed this year). These fit the bill for Winter in Texas. He loved them because they stretch and he can move. We got two - grey and black.
We did return for a larger size because the ankle area was hard to put on (big feet). The waist is fine in the larger size.
Don't hesitate to buy these. They're a hit!

We ordered his usual large, but exchanged for XL for ease of dressing. Guess he has big feet, but the large were a bit tight to get on and get his foot through the ankle. After the exchange, they were just right! He won't get to wear them for some time because we life in Houston, but he'll be ready when the first cold front ushers itself in.
He looked GREAT in these!
